Last week I was having major writer’s block so I went to Instagram and created a poll of what I should do for this week’s blog post. One of my friends who also runs a music Instagram (go follow them on Instagram barepuremusic) gave me the idea of “how music has impacted my
life in the last 12 months” and I thought about it and it has definitely impacted my life as a whole, but I immediately thought of finding songs from each month that I listened to most. Each one of these songs has so many memories behind them. I can’t wait to share them with you!
MARCH 2020- the song I listened to most was ‘911/Mr. Lonely (feat. Frank Ocean & Steve Lacy’ by Tyler The Creator. As if anyone could forget March 2020, it was a very lonely month for most of the world. Shout out to COVID-19. I had just come home from college for spring break and towards the end of the month, they told us we weren’t coming back until the fall semester. I was a junior and wasn’t too worried about finishing out the semester out online but I knew I would miss the hell out of my roommates and friends. I spent a lot of my time in the bathtub, in bed, at work. I was so lonely so for this song to be my most listened to makes a lot of sense.
APRIL 2020- As Coronavirus slowly took everything from us, one thing I received was the Beastie Boys documentary on Apple Tv. I grew up listening to the group and always loved their music, but I didn’t know their story. I watched it about 6 times. I made everyone in my family watch it. I also told all of my friends about it on our daily facetime call. I started listening to them again after watching the documentary and one song I played every time I got in the car was ‘Paul Revere’. I remember that song coming on the radio when I was younger, sitting in the backseat of my mom’s Jeep Liberty at the age of 7 knowing every word. I think this song was my most played simply because it is a good song and I had a slight obsession.
MAY 2020- This is a funny one only because I love this song so much but it doesn’t really have any correlation to my life or what I was going through. The song I chose for this month is ‘Your Love’ by Nicki Minaj. This song immediately puts me in a good mood. I remember one of my friends not knowing this song and since I played it so much, she learned the song!
JUNE 2020- ‘Number One Fan’ by MUNA is such a vibe. This was considered my boyfriend (at the time) and I’s song. Every time the song came on in the car we would scream it out of the windows or at each other. It was so cute. Although we aren’t together anymore, I still listen to it every once in a while and think about those fun memories.
JULY 2020- ‘Workin Out’ by JID is one of my all-time favorite songs. I had it added to one of my playlists back in December of 2019 and was listening to the playlist and had self-realization of how good the song was. I would listen to it every day driving to my boyfriend’s house. It is so melodic but funky.
AUGUST 2020- ‘Countin Up’ by Rico Nasty was definitely the most played song in august. My birthday is in August and I wanted my life to be a party 24/7. It is definitely a song that you can yell and get rowed up with your friends while yall are in the car.
SEPTEMBER 2020- ‘Sofia’ by Clairo is September’s most played song. It was actually my top song listened to in the year 2020. It is such a vibe (anyone that has listened to it can agree). I listened to it at all times of the day: going to class, driving home from work, going home from college, any time of the day, I was probably listening to it.
OCTOBER 2020- ‘Leaves’ by Miguel was the perfect song for this month. Fall was slowly creeping on us and with all of the leaves changing colors, I listened to it constantly. I found this song on Miguel’s Instagram. He was playing it for an NPR live session. It is so beautiful. His voice is as smooth as butter live and on the recorded song. My life was starting to change as well. There were so many things going on that I felt like I couldn’t really change. So this song was very fitting for the month of October.
NOVEMBER 2020- ‘you were good to me’ by Jeremy Zucker was a little overplayed in the month of November. I just got broken up with and was very heartbroken. I didn’t have time to think about it due to the end of my fall semester and finals. There was so much going on so every time I listened to this song, it allowed me to express how I really felt. Tears, so many tears.
DECEMBER 2020- ‘Good Days’ by SZA played both in my head and on my phone for months, I still listen to it occasionally. It is such a chill, feel-good vibe. After being heartbroken, I needed a pick me up and it was definitely this song. Thank you SZA for this song!
JANUARY 2021- ‘Blue World’ by Mac Miller (Rest In Peace) was my top song for January. It is so trippy and it has such a feel-good vibe. My friend Emma and I listened to it like three times a day. It made me feel like I was floating in outer space.
FEBRUARY 2021- ‘Antidote’ Orion Sun is one of those songs that you can listen to over and over again. It is so soft. The beat makes you want to head bop and do a little dance or sway to it. I chose this song because not only did I listen to it a lot this month, but it got me through the long month of February.
MARCH 2021- ‘Why’ by Dominic Fike is what I am currently obsessed with. Not only do I love Dominic Fike as an artist but I love this song so much I thank him for it. I have been going through a lot of things and at the beginning of the song, it says “you ever wonder why” a couple of times and that was me all of March. I was scared of how my life would be this month due to how last March treated me. I wondered why was everything hitting me at once. I didn’t deserve to deal with so many things at once. Thankfully I feel like my life is coming back to normal.
